Long ago, Dog lived in the forest with the other wild animals. He was strong, swift, and respected. But unlike Leopard, Hyena, and Lion, Dog loved peace more than fighting.
One dry season, the forest suffered a terrible famine. Every day, the stronger animals chased Dog away from whatever food he found.
Hungry and exhausted, Dog wandered to the edge of a nearby village. There, an old woman noticed him lying beneath a tree.
“You look weary,” she said kindly.
She placed a bowl of leftover yam and soup before him.
Dog ate gratefully and wagged his tail.
The next day, he returned. Again, the woman fed him. In return, Dog barked whenever strangers approached her compound and chased away thieves at night.
Before long, the villagers realized that Dog was not only loyal but also a faithful guardian. They welcomed him into their homes, sharing food and giving him a place to sleep.
When the wild animals heard this, they laughed.
“You have become a servant of humans!” Lion mocked.
Dog replied, “A full stomach earned through loyalty is better than an empty pride in the wilderness.”
Years passed.
While the wild animals continued to struggle through harsh seasons, Dog lived among people, protecting their homes and growing alongside their families.
From that day onward, Dog chose to remain with humans. His children learned to guard homes, hunt with their masters, and become trusted companions.
That is why, the elders say, Dog is no longer counted among the wild animals.
Kindness can change a life forever. Loyalty often begins with a single act of compassion, and true friendship is built on trust, not fear.
