Today, while watching Africa Independent Television (AIT), I saw an appeal under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, asking the public to help two Nigerians reportedly needing tens of millions of naira each for urgent kidney transplant surgeries.
It stopped me.
How did we get to a point where ordinary Nigerians must publicly beg for money to stay alive, while billions can allegedly disappear from public coffers?
During elections, the poor are remembered with peanuts and promises. After elections, their suffering continues.
And while people struggle to pay hospital bills, some religious institutions build enormous structures with donations from the same struggling population.
We keep talking about heaven. But what about the people suffering here on earth?
Perhaps repentance should not only mean going to church, praying and giving offerings.
Perhaps repentance also means refusing to steal what belongs to the people, caring for the sick, and using our wealth and power to make life less painful for others.
Because a society that cannot save its sick citizens but can spend fortunes pursuing political power has a serious moral problem.
