In the Book of Job, Satan appeared before God and had a conversation with Him.
God asked him where he had been.
Satan answered.
Then God pointed out Job, and Satan challenged Job’s faithfulness.
God permitted Satan to test Job but commanded him not to take Job’s life.
Later in the New Testament, this same Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness and even took Him to the pinnacle of the temple.
Now here’s what confuses me.
Many Christians believe Satan was cast out of heaven and expelled from God’s presence.
Yet in Job, Satan seems to appear before God, converse with Him, receive permission from Him, and even obey limits set by Him.
So what exactly happened?
Can Satan still appear before God?
Was he completely cast out, or does he still have some form of access?
And if God could speak to Satan and place restrictions on him concerning Job, does that mean Satan can still be summoned for conversation?
Before anyone panics, I am not planning to summon Satan.
In fact, if such a meeting were possible, my first negotiation would be simple:
“Please leave God’s children alone.”
But seriously…
What are we supposed to make of these passages?
Are we reading them literally?
Symbolically?
Or is there something deeper happening that many of us have missed?
I am not making conclusions.
I am asking questions.
