I’ve been asking myself a question that I can’t seem to shake.
Jesus said:
“No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
But then I remembered my ancestors.
Long before Christianity reached Igbo land, they believed in Chukwu, the Supreme Creator. They woke at dawn, looked to the heavens, gave thanks, prayed for protection, and entrusted their lives to God according to the knowledge they had.
Then they died.
So where are they?
Did they perish simply because they were born before missionaries brought Christianity to our land?
Or would a just God judge them according to the light they had?
Now let’s bring the question closer to home.
I am a Christian today because I was born into a Christian family.
Had I been born into a Muslim family, I might sincerely believe Islam is the truth.
Had I been born into a Hindu family, I might sincerely believe Hinduism is the truth.
Had I been born into a Jewish family, I might sincerely believe Judaism is the truth.
Each of us is often convinced that our religion is the true one.
But how much of that conviction comes from truth… and how much comes from where we happened to be born?
If salvation depends on knowing Christ, what happens to the person who never truly had that opportunity?
If God is perfectly just, how does He judge someone who sincerely sought Him but never knew Jesus?
These are not questions of hatred.
They are questions of justice.
Perhaps the harder question is not whether my religion is true.
Perhaps the harder question is:
If I had been born into another religion, would I still be as certain that I had found the truth?
Let’s have an honest conversation—without insults, without fear, and without pretending these questions don’t exist.
