WHO OR WHAT IS THE 144,000?

Almost everyone has heard of the 144,000 mentioned in Revelation.

But almost no one agrees on who they are.

Are they exactly 144,000 people?

Are they symbolic?

Are they the Church?

Are they ethnic Israelites?

Or is the number itself trying to tell us something deeper?

Here’s what makes the mystery even more interesting.

Revelation says the 144,000 are sealed from twelve tribes of Israel.

But look closely at the list.

One tribe is missing.

Another tribe appears instead.

And the order isn’t the same as the tribal lists found elsewhere in the Bible.

Why?

If God was simply listing the tribes of Israel…

why change the list?

Then there’s another question.

Immediately after John sees the 144,000, he sees:

“A great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, tribe, people, and language.”

Are these two different groups…

or is John hearing one thing and then seeing another—just as he hears about the Lion of Judah but sees a slain Lamb?

The answers have divided Christians for centuries.

Some insist the 144,000 are literal.

Others argue the number is symbolic.

Others believe both passages describe the same redeemed people from two different perspectives.

So…

Who—or what—is the 144,000?
