Did Jesus Visit Purgatory?

Many Christians recite the Apostles’ Creed:

“He descended into hell.”

Then the Bible says:

”…He went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison…” (1 Peter 3:18–20)

Here’s what I find intriguing…

The Bible never tells us what Jesus proclaimed.

It never identifies exactly who the spirits in prison were.

It never records their response.

Yet Jesus went to them after His death.

This raises a question I’ve often wondered about…

Could this event be what many people have in mind when they think of purgatory?

I’m not claiming that 1 Peter 3 proves the doctrine of purgatory.

I’m simply asking whether this passage could explain why many believe there is an intermediate state after death.

Or am I reading more into the text than Scripture actually says?

If Jesus did not go there to proclaim the gospel, what exactly did He proclaim—and to whom?
