One of the most puzzling passages in the Bible is found in Exodus 4:24–26.
God had just chosen Moses to confront Pharaoh and lead Israel out of Egypt. He had performed miracles before him, spoken to him from the burning bush, and entrusted him with one of the greatest missions in biblical history.
Then, without warning, the Bible says:
“At a lodging place on the way, the LORD met him and sought to kill him.” (Exodus 4:24)
Why?
The passage doesn’t immediately explain. Instead, Moses’ wife, Zipporah, quickly circumcised their son and touched Moses’ feet with the foreskin. Only then did the danger pass.
This raises several intriguing questions:
• Why would God appoint Moses and then seek to kill him before the mission even began?
• Was Moses neglecting a covenant command regarding circumcision?
• Why was Zipporah the one who acted, rather than Moses?
• Why does such a dramatic event receive only three short verses in the Bible?
Some interpreters believe this was God’s response to Moses failing to keep the covenant of circumcision (Genesis 17), while others see additional layers of meaning in the account.
Whatever the explanation, Exodus 4:24–26 remains one of the Bible’s most mysterious passages.
