Matthew 13:54–58 records the people of Nazareth saying:
“Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us?”
The passage names four men as Jesus’ “brothers” and even mentions His sisters.
So why do some Christians believe Jesus had biological siblings, while others maintain that Mary remained perpetually a virgin?
Does the word “brothers” refer to siblings born to Mary, or could it mean close relatives, as some Christian traditions teach?
