Did Jesus Rise on the Second Day… or the Third Day?

Christians often say Jesus rose on the third day.

But if He died on Friday and rose on Sunday

Let’s count the nights.

🌑 Friday night — Night 1

🌑 Saturday night — Night 2

Then, before another night arrived…

☀️ Sunday morning — Jesus had already risen.

So where is the third night?

Jesus Himself said:

“For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

— Matthew 12:40

Many Christians explain this by saying the Jews counted any part of a day as a whole day, which is why Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are called three days.

But does that explanation also account for three nights?

If Friday-to-Sunday includes only two nights, how should Matthew 12:40 be understood?

Could “three days and three nights” have been an idiom…

Or does it point to a different crucifixion timeline?

What do you think Scripture teaches?
