Many Christians pray for those who have died, believing their prayers can benefit them.
But does the Bible actually teach this?
Those who support the practice often point to 2 Maccabees 12:43–46, where Judas Maccabeus collected money and sent it to Jerusalem to offer a sin offering for soldiers who had died, believing that praying for the dead was “a holy and pious thought.”
Others point to 2 Timothy 1:16–18, where Paul wrote:
“May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus… May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that Day.”
Some believe Paul was praying for a man who had already died, while others argue that Onesiphorus was still alive and Paul was simply blessing his household.
Yet these questions remain:
- Did Jesus ever command His followers to pray for the dead?
- Did any of the apostles clearly teach Christians to do so?
- If praying for the dead is an essential Christian practice, why is there no direct instruction in the New Testament?
The Bible clearly teaches us to pray for the living…
But where does it plainly command believers to pray for the dead?
